The Los Angeles Dodgers announced that right-handed pitcher Dinelson Lamet has been designated for assignment. The team announced via X on Saturday.
Lamet could not be sent to the minor leagues without being placed on waivers first, and the Dodgers wanted a fresh bullpen arm for the weekend. Right-handed pitcher Gus Varland got the call.
Lamet had been a bright spot early this season for the Boys in Blue. In three games this season, he collected his first-ever save in his seven-year career on Wednesday. He also recorded a 2.08 ERA, three strikeouts, and a 0.92 WHIP in 4.1 innings.
The 31-year-old seemed to find his groove as a reliever with the Dodgers after being a promising starter for the San Diego Padres from 2019-20.
Varland will come up from Triple-A and is no stranger to a major league bullpen. His time in the big leagues has not been kind, however, as he owns a 6.53 ERA and a 2.08 WHIP in 20.2 innings. The 27-year-old will likely be used in low-leverage situations.
